Upgrade The Stock Audio System In Your Car

Posted on: 24 October 2018

Music is an excellent addition to any drive, and if you are driving a long distance, a top-of-the-line audio system can make that music even more enjoyable. Most car audio systems are adequate, but they could always be better. Lower-end speakers and low-power systems will limit the sound quality. You can upgrade the system, and there are a plethora of available head units and systems available for most cars, trucks, and SUVs.

Define Your Needs

Before you go out and buy a new audio system for your car, it is a good idea to look at what you have and what you want to improve. A replacement head unit (the radio in the dash) is great, but if the current speakers can't handle the power output, damage to them is possible. Additional components, like amps, are just out of the question with stock speakers. Take some time and outline your goals for the new audio system before you start shopping for components.

Fit and Finish

When it is time to install the new head unit in your vehicle, you want it to look good. An audio system that is poorly installed seems sloppy, and if the car is new, that can detract from the look of the vehicle. Not every stereo you find on the market will fit your car, so you may have to use a particular installation kit to make it work. Some of these kits are very nice, and some are very cheap universal kits. Stay away from the universal kits if possible; they never look right, and often they have to be modified to work at all.

Hide The Wires

Another essential part of the installation process is hiding the wires that connect the system. Most cars already have a path that the audio wires follow through the car, so if you can run your wires the same way,  the installation will look much cleaner. Often the trim in the vehicle hides these wires, so remove it if required. Be careful when working with the trim, because the plastic clips that secure it can break when you separate the plastic from the car body. If you do break them, your local auto parts store most likely stocks replacements.

Speaker Sizes

If you are going to upgrade the speakers in your car, it is essential to measure the stock speakers. For the new speakers to fit correctly in the enclosures, they need to be the same size as the stock ones. They can have more power, but if you are trying to keep that stock look, you don't want to have to modify the speaker enclosures built into the car.
